In 2011, Weight Watchers revoked its original system and announced its new and improved Points Plus system. However, both have their merits and some people still swear by the original methodology. Because of this, we'll outline both!

  1. 1

Use an online calculator to pinpoint your daily allowance. Making sure it uses the PointsPlus system! There are no two ways around it -- just getting a calculator is the simplest way. With the new formula, activity is assumed with your sex and certain numbers are weighted and there's a bunch of decimal places you really shouldn't have to worry about.

    • Just to prove a point, the Total Energy Expenditure formula is:
      TEE = 387 - (7.31 x age) + (PA x ((10.9 x wgt) + (660.7 x Ht))[1]
      • ...See? And that's just one formula of many.
  2. 2

Calculate your food points, too. The process of counting food points is different with the new system, too. You need to get a calculator and punch in the amount of protein, carbs, fat and fiber (no calories!) in the food you're eating. Once you do this enough times, it'll become old hat. Weight Watchers has reference material for most restaurants and food items, but if you run into the odd product that isn't pre-listed, you can figure it out with a few button pushes.

    • This formula is a bit convoluted, too, if you want to do it yourself. Curious? It looks something like this:

      Points Plus = (Protein grams / 11) + (Carbohydrate grams / 9) + (Fat grams / 4) - (Fiber grams / 35)

    • Here's another way of thinking about it: [(Protein grams x 16) + (Carbohydrate grams x 19) + (Fat grams x 45) + (Fiber grams x 5)]/175
      • Again, a calculator will be your best friend.
  3. 3

Find out how many activity points you have. There are a whole bunch of resources you can find online when it comes to calculating how many points you've earned for your workouts. Onemorepound.com has a good chart that can walk you through it. You'll need to know the intensity and duration of your workout and your weight.

    • 30 minutes of a moderately intense workout for someone that weights 175 pounds is two points. If you wanted to eat that cheesecake, you'll need to work out for a spell, that's for sure.
    • If it wasn't clear, activity points can be lobbed off your daily points usage. If you ate 27 points worth of food, but moderately exercised for 30 minutes, you're down to 25 (weight depending). Huzzah!
  4. 4

Know the "zero" foods. On this new program, all fruits and many veggies (but not all) are zero points. AWESOME. That's the way it should be. Check your materials or with your weight watcher buddies to find out which ones are on this list. But remember, eating 19 bananas is not the way to go. They should be snacks, not meals!

    • However, they're not zero when they're combined in recipes. Be sure to include their content when you're finding out the point value of dishes you're creating.[2]
  5. 5

Use your 49 weekly PointsPlus points whenever and however you'd like. On this new system, you get 49 points to throw around freely. P.F. Chang's, anyone?

  6. 6

Know the differences between the systems. The reason the old system got revamped is because it had too much emphasis on calories. If you got confronted with a small bag of cookies and an apple (eat these or your family gets it!), they'd have similar point values. You had no reason to go for the apple over the cookies, even though it's obviously healthier.

    • That being said, both systems do lead to watching calories -- a basic tenant of losing weight. If the original system is easier for you, choose it. If it's easy, you'll stick with it!
    • In general, most foods have higher point values with the new system (apart from fruits and veggies, which are often 0). However, you'll probably have a higher daily allowance, too.
  1. 1

Start the point analysis for your daily allowance with your sex and age. The energy requirement of every person is individual and thus the number of points you may consume can differ among different people. Just answer the following questions and add all the points up.

    • Sex:
      • a) Female - 2 POINTS
        • If you're nursing, that's 12 points.
      • b) Male - 8 POINTS
    • Age
      • 17-26 - 4 POINTS
      • 27-37 - 3 POINTS
      • 38-47 - 2 POINTS
      • 48-58 - 1 POINT
      • Over 58 - 0 POINTS
  2. 2

Add in your weight. How much do you weigh in pounds? You'll have to note the first two digits (or first digit if you're under 100 pounds). To convert to pounds from kilograms, simply multiply your weight by 2.2 (for example, a person weighing 70 kg weighs 154 lbs).

    • 90 - 99 lbs - 9 POINTS
    • 100 - 109 lbs - 10 POINTS
    • 110 - 119 lbs - 11 POINTS
    • 120 - 129 lbs - 12 POINTS
    • 130 - 139 lbs - 13 POINTS
    • 140 - 149 lbs - 14 POINTS
    • 150 - 159 lbs - 15 POINTS
    • 160 - 169 lbs - 16 POINTS
    • 170 - 179 lbs - 17 POINTS
    • 180 - 189 lbs - 18 POINTS
      • And so on and so forth.
  3. 3

Account for your height. The taller you are, the more points you get.

    • a) Between 5'1" and 5'10" - 1 POINT
    • b) 5 feet 10" or taller - 2 POINTS
  4. 4

Account for your activity level. The more physically active you are in general, the more calories you expend on a daily basis. Because of this, it needs to be computed into your daily points allowance. What is your activity level?

    • a) mainly sitting - 0 POINTS
    • b) mainly standing, sometimes sitting - 2 POINTS
    • c) mainly walking, sometimes standing - 4 POINTS
    • d) physically exhausting - 6 POINTS
  5. 5

Add all your points up above. This is how many points you are allowed to eat each day. However, keep in mind that you have 35 flex points that can be used throughout the week, too.

    • What's more, physical activity counts as negative points. If you've worked out that day, you may get a few bonus points under your belt to reduce the points you acquire with meals.
  6. 6

Calculate the points in your food. Now that you know your daily allowance, it's time to know how many points are in the foods you're eating. The original system is pretty straightforward, at least in comparison to its newer counterpart. Here's the formula:

    • p=(cal/50) + (fat/12) - (fiber/5)
    • In simpler terms: the number of points = calories / 50 + fat grams / 12 - fiber / 5
      • However, only fiber up to 4 is used. So if your dish has 10 grams of fiber...you still use 4. Don't ask. But yes, that is a minus sign; fiber makes your food healthier, so it's fewer points.

  • Another method to find the points in a food from nutritional information is by using this simple formula: e(cal per 100g)/70 + f(g per 100g)/4.05. This way you get the POINTS in 100g of a product.

  • The fat calculation is only estimated for ease of calculation. If there are more than 20g of fat, divide the fat by 1.2 before adding and ask yourself why you need so much fat in a food?

Things You'll Need

  • Online calculator (optional, but recommended)

Farmhouse Bathroom Before & After

Ready to get out of the heat and enjoy some AC while you makeover your bathroom? Join me and let's do this! My bathroom started out with run-of-the-mill oak cabinets, ugly linoleum flooring, a builder-grade, plain Jane mirror and blue walls. I hadn't done a thing to this bathroom since we bought the house 5 years ago. I couldn't wait to put my own style into it.

When planning out my fixer upper bathroom I knew I wanted to incorporate my favorite farmhouse style finds with functionality. I also knew I wanted my budget to stay below $1,000. That meant getting creative and shopping for everything I'd need at Lowe's. Not only have I found their quality to be superb, but I have also found they have the best selection for the farmhouse style I was looking for.

First I planned out my farmhouse style color palette. I chose seashell gray for the walls, bright white for the oak trim and doors, and Sharkfin for the vanity and cabinets.

Farmhouse bathroom vanity makeover. Paint your vanity cabinets for a new look!

I bought a cabinet enamel paint for the vanity and cabinets. I planned on using the same hardware on my cabinets. I removed the hardware before painting them. I then primed them with a bonding primer and painted them with enamel cabinet paint in Sharkfin.

In looking at the vanity, I knew the light fixture would need to be replaced. I went with this farmhouse style vanity light fixture that was under $100. I LOVE the look!!

I also upgraded the faucets in our double sinks. The bathroom faucets we had reminded me of cheap hotel faucets and I've hated them for five years. I couldn't wait to change them out. I chose a budget-friendly Peerless Brushed Nickel faucet .

Builder grade mirror makeover. How to build a rustic farmhouse style mirror frame for your bathroom.

I knew I wanted to transform my builder-grade mirror into a stunning piece that stood out. By adding a simple pine frame to the mirror I was able to achieve this major transformation for around $50! Can you believe that?! It turned out beautifully and I couldn't believe the huge difference it made in the overall look of the vanity (rustic diy vanity mirrors tutorial).

Farmhouse bathroom medicine cabinet makeover DIY. Take your look up a level with this idea!

I did the same thing on the medicine cabinet. You'll just need some pine boards, corner brackets and stain (all was found at Lowe's). Get the instructions for the rustic mirror frame right here!

Farmhouse bathroom flooring idea. Barnwood floor on a budget.

Flooring makes a HUGE difference in the overall look of a room. The flooring was the last major piece of our fixer upper bathroom makeover and it made the whole look come together. I couldn't wait to kiss the laminate flooring goodbye and install this gorgeous barn wood-looking flooring. I chose vinyl plank flooring in an Ashville Pine color . We were able to install it over our existing laminate flooring which saved us the work of ripping it out. I love that the flooring has the hammered/weathered look and feel of barn wood.

Easy farmhouse rustic shelves in your bathroom makes a big difference!

We also installed rustic shelves over the toilet. I filled the shelves with a mixture of textiles to give it the farmhouse style feel I was going for. By using glass, metal, wood, and fabric you can achieve a beautiful fixer upper style shelf.

Farmhouse shelves with farmhouse decor ideas. Perfect for a fixer upper bathroom.

I topped the wood shelving with glass jars filled with soap, cotton balls and Q-tips and added a metal basket with rolled towels in it. By adding a little greenery and a galvanized metal pitcher I was able to complete the look.

I also mixed metal finishes by using oil rubbed bronze and brushed nickel. I left the existing brushed nickel hardware on the cabinets and the bath hooks. I added an oil rubbed bronze shower curtain rod , hand towel hooks and an air vent cover .

Lilly Pulitzer for Pottery Barn Kids Collection

Happy Thursday, Lovelies!

At this point, you know that my love for Lilly Pulitzer runs deep. About a year ago I shared Lilly's "Big Girl" Room Reveal with you all. It featured amazing pieces from the exclusive Lilly Pulitzer for Pottery Barn Kids collection that I picked to complete Lilly's bedroom updates!

If you read my blog frequently, then you probably know that my husband is a financial planner. For every financial decision that we make, there is a notebook full of Alex's math to prove that we are making the best possible decision (at the guaranteed best price) for our family.

This year we did a few small updates to our house. We want to fully renovate several rooms in the near future, which means, for now, we are keeping it simple with things like paint color and light fixtures. So, after we painted Lilly's bathroom this year, we knew that we wanted to make it a bit more personalized for her.

That is when our friends at Pottery Barn Kids reached out to see if we would be willing to collaborate with them for the…NEW Lilly Pulitzer for Pottery Barn Kids collection!

The best news is that the collection re-released several of the most popular pieces from last year (like Lilly's quilt set) but they have incorporated some great new pieces too!

Bathroom Updates:

What could make a bright new coat of paint better? A bathroom adorned in colorful, lively prints from Lilly Pulitzer!

Lilly's favorite piece is the flamingo hooded bath wrap towel! It comes in two sizes and I love the adorable printed beak!

My favorite piece is the fun mermaid shower curtain! This Mermaid Cove print is one of Lilly's favorite of all time, and I don't think there is a cuter shower curtain for a little girl's bathroom!

The medallion bath mat brings all the colors together in a fun way!

To celebrate the new collection we, of course, had to grab the new Pop-Up print (called Multi Pop-Up of the Jungle) from Lilly Pulitzer. They released this print specifically in honor of the new Lilly X PB collaboration.

Bathroom Details:

  • Mermaid Cove Shower Curtain
  • Bath Mat
  • Personalized Stepstool
  • Hooded Flamingo Towel
  • Guest Hand Towels
  • Printed Towel Set
  • Bath Towels
  • Beach Towel
  • Storage Basket

Bedroom Updates:

Lilly's patchwork quilt bedding is all part of this year's collection! She was so excited about the new collection launch that Alex and I surprised her with the turtle and octopus she had been eyeing up.

Pottery Barn Kids sent Lilly the Lilly Pulitzer designer doll. It is the sweetest. It has a fancy braid in its hair and dangly earrings, the cutest printed shift dress, a woven purse with a flamingo inside, AND the cutest lace-up espadrilles. It is the quintessential Lilly Pulitzer lover! It would make such a perfect gift for any Lilly fan on your list.

Lilly's window seat is one of my favorite spots in our house. The cushion is made out of seersucker and Lilly Pulitzer fabric that Alex and I used as table runners at our wedding. The pillows are a mix of old and new. The old ones came from one of my very first apartments, and I love that they decorate Lilly's room now.

The monogram over Lilly's bed and the Lilly Pulitzer shift dress artwork can both be found on Etsy.

This is Lilly's favorite spot in our house. I often find her reading or playing with her stuffed animals here. There are three different prints of the Anywhere Chair this year!

Lilly Pulitzer has been releasing some of my favorite prints of all time this year. This pink and green "Koala Me Maybe" is one of my all time favorites! The lace overlay detailing and texture of the fabric remind me of the vintage Lilly dresses!

Bedroom Details:

  • Paint Colors: Sherwin Williams Child Like (pink) and Lacewing (green)
  • Quilt Set
  • Anywhere Chair
  • Curtains
  • Rug
  • Wall Monogram
  • Wall Decor
  • Lilly Doll
  • Personalized Pillows
  • Flamingo Pillow
  • Turtle and Octopus

A special thank you to Pottery Barn Kids for this special collaboration! Be sure to check the new exclusive Lilly Pulitzer X Pottery Barn Kids (as well as Pottery Barn and PB Teen) out!

xoxo,

Kalyn
